Birth control pills are used by an estimated 11 million women in the U.S. and 99 million women worldwide. Today's birth control pills contain a much lower dose of estrogen than their old formula. That means they have fewer side effects and still highly effective. Most combination pills use the same form of estrogen (ethinyl estradiol) but different kind of progestins.
